What is Art?: Finding the Next Picasso

Anyone can be an artist. Yes, I said it. If you have a pencil or some paint and a blank piece of paper you could be the next Picasso.

Art is expression and we all have the right and capability to express ourselves on canvas. And who can decide that one expression is more authentic or “better” than another? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and this is a lesson that I learned early on in life. What may be a magnificent piece of art to one person could be total crap to someone else. The reverse it also true: just because “you were never good at drawing” doesn’t mean you can’t create masterpieces.

And, given the right media, circumstances and the freedom to do so, I believe that anyone who can look within themselves has the ability to create great art. I believe that art is human nature. The more connected we are to our spirits and souls the better our art becomes. Don’t get me wrong, some people have raw talent and ability, but don’t count yourself out if you can’t sketch the Eiffel Tower in great detail from memory is 2 and a half minutes.

My advice to anyone who admires art or aspires to create is to do just that. Don’t doubt yourself. Our only limits are the ones we give ourselves. So pick up that paintbrush, set up that easel and begin to create. You were put on this earth to do just that.
