The Two Most Important Items in Your Closet

The Two Most Important Items in Your Closet

You’re standing in front of your closet with that awesome printed skirt you just bought.  Think Peter Piloto or Clover Canyon (I actually bought this skirt as I was researching clothes for this article- the things I do for my readers).  It was so cool that you bought it without thinking how you would style it and now you’re stuck.  What do you wear with it?  I’m here to tell you what to wear with it and you probably already have it in your closet- either your grey tee/sweater or your chambray shirt.

Seriously, these two items literally go with everything and I don’t use that word loosely.  Anytime I have a styling conundrum of what to pair with a skirt or pants I reach for one of these tops.  Any shade of denim- check.  Any color or cut of trousers- check.  Any print- check, check, check.  They’re magic.  A grey tee dresses down more formal bottoms and a chambray shirt can elevate something more casual.  And there are infinite options for both.  Because you can never have too many of these life savers, here are a few of my favorites:

J Crew: this cashmere V-neck and this merino wool crew neck

Equipment: this oversized cashmere beauty

T by Alexander Wang: this jersey pocket tee

Rag & Bone: this perfectly slouchy cotton tee and this leather trimmed chambray shirt

Madewell: their chambray shirt in wilder wash

Gap: 1969 denim shirt

Alice + Olivia: cropped chambray shirt

P.S. Both the Peter Pilotto and Clover Canyon skirts I referenced above are on sale in case you’re in the market for a couple of great skirts.  You’re welcome.
